Sony has not officially confirmed the device, unlike Project Amethyst which is official.
PS5-firmware Low Power Mode is seen as validation work: games tuned for it should be Canis-ready on day one. Sony’s Nishino has hinted the next generation is a “seamless experience beyond the living room”, which fits a native handheld.
How it differs from PlayStation Portal
Portal is an 8-inch remote player for PS5 over Wi-Fi ($199-$249 streaming via Plus Premium), not standalone. Canis is rumored native hardware, closer to Steam Deck model but PlayStation-native.
See PlayStation Portal guide and PS6 vs Xbox for competitor handhelds.
Will the handheld play real PS6 games or watered-down versions?
Same library, scaled fidelity: 16 RDNA 5 CUs cannot match the home chip, so expect lower resolution and settings, like Steam Deck versus a desktop. Native play with reduced fidelity is the pitch, not parity. Low Power Mode validation (above) is how Sony gets developers Canis-ready early, with scaling via backwards compatibility.
Canis vs Steam Deck vs Xbox handheld: how does it compare?
Canis wins on PlayStation-native library, Steam Deck on PC catalog depth, and the ROG Xbox Ally X on Microsoft-hybrid versatility. On paper Canis’s newer RDNA 5 should beat the Ally X’s RDNA 3.5 at the same 16CU count.
| Area | Canis (rumored) | Steam Deck | ROG Xbox Ally X | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Library | PlayStation-native | PC (Steam) | Xbox/PC hybrid | | Compute | 16CU RDNA 5 (leaked) | Custom AMD APU | Zen 5 + RDNA 3.5, 16CU | | Pitch | Native portable PS6 | PC catalog depth | Microsoft-hybrid versatility |

Frequently Asked Questions
Will PS6 have a handheld?
Leaks point to Canis ~2027 at ~$649 (a pre-crisis estimate), but unconfirmed officially.
Is it like Portal?
No, Canis would run games natively; Portal is remote.
Will it share PS6 library?
If native, likely via shared architecture and backwards compatibility scaling.
How does memory crisis affect it?
Also uses LPDDR5X, less impacted than GDDR7 but still pressured.
Project Canis price: is $649 worth it next to a $799 PS6?
On performance per dollar, no: the handheld costs 87% of a home console (PS6 price) for a fraction of the power. The value case rests on portable-native play, not power, and $649 itself is a pre-crisis estimate under review.
Canis battery life: what should buyers expect?
No data exists. A 24GB LPDDR5X plus RDNA 5 handheld realistically lands at 2-4 hours in demanding games; set expectations against Steam Deck, not Switch.
